During the final year of my Bachelor of Applied Social Science, I conducted a research dissertation titled "A Castletownbere Fisherman's Perspective on Climate Change." The research explored the socio-economic pressures on the marine industry and highlighted the underrepresentation of fishermen within the Irish fishing sector. This underrepresentation contributes to a disconnect on critical issues such as overfishing and climate change, with many fishermen viewing these concerns as 'constructed' by policymakers and scientists, often without the input of practical, on-the-ground workers like themselves. The study concluded that increasing fishermen’s involvement in industry decision-making could significantly improve the effectiveness of sustainable initiatives set forth by the EU and local governments.
