Pauline Simpson is an information scientist with a wealth of experience in marine science data and information management and participation in national and international information technology projects such as: CAPARDUS, EuroSea, JERICO S3, Iliad DIgital Twins of the Ocean, Blue Cloud 2026, OBSEA4CLIM and the new CINEA Standards and Best Practices in Ocean Observation.   Her education is in geology and oceanography and information sciences.

At present she is Repository Manager of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Ocean Best Practices System (OBPS)  providing the ocean community with an open access, full text archive of methodological documents, multimedia files and other digital records which either serve as best practices or are intended to be their precursors. The vision of OBPS is to have agreed and broadly adopted methods across ocean research, operations, applications and data management -  interoperability and reproducibility of practices is a high priority to support the move to a global ocean observing system.

From 2019 - 2024, Pauline was Project Manager and Repository Manager of the IOC Ocean Best Practices System.  Previously, as Head of Information Services at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, she was a recognized early advocate of the Open Access/Digital Repository movement in the UK, was involved in the early design of the Eprints repository software and over the years has implemented institutional, thematic (2 x marine and aquatic sciences), research council and professional society repositories.

During her long tenure as Chair of the UNESCO/IOC International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange Group of Experts on Marine Information, Pauline initiated and still is involved with many of the IODE flagship digital information products.

Previous:

National Oceanography Centre, Southampton UK
