I lead a team which develops methods used to verify operational ocean forecasts produced by the Met Office and by the European MyOcean service. We develop tools based on simple metrics in order to monitor the accuracy of the operational systems, and to enable intercomparisons between forecasting centres. We are also experimenting with more advanced user-focused metrics from the field of NWP and we expect these to provide rich information on the strengths and weaknesses of the ocean forecast products. I am co-chair of the GODAE OceanView Task Team on Intercomparison and Validation.

I have been involved in operational ocean forecasting at the UK Met Office since 2003, with experience of model development and validation, operational monitoring, and development of the operational technical infrastructure. Prior to my current role, I managed a team with responsibility for the testing and preparation of upgrades to our operational ocean systems.

I have also worked on climate model development, with a particular focus on model validation and on tropical atmosphere and ocean circulation.
