The purpose of this meeting is to identify sources of tsunamis that may affect the coastline of Colombia and Ecuador, and to assess the risks that arise from a local tsunami. The meeting will be focused on exploring tsunami sources in the Colombia/Ecuador coast, and more specifically on the Nazca-South America plates subduction zone. The accurate assessment of tsunami risk in a region requires a credible record of past tsunami events. Source data from various institutions, as well as field data from observatories is of great help. Cooperation among experts in the field of seismology, geology, geodesy, sea level monitoring, sedimentology, tectonics, tsunami modelling, paleo-seismology, paleo-tsunami and even history is crucial to develop a sound scientific tsunami hazard assessment. Such cooperation helps organize data and information to accurately evaluate the hazard. At this meeting, we also want to organise a public awareness activity with local communities to contribute to the ongoing efforts of the countries on effectively assessing and mitigating tsunami risk.
