In 1990 the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche (UAC) made the decision of promoting research and developing human resources regarding priority issues of protection and evaluation of coastal ecosystems and their renewable biological resources. With this objective and with the support from the Secretaría de Educación Pública (Mexican Board of Education), through the Sub Secretariat of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Universidad Autónoma de Campeche announced the creation of the program named "Programa de Ecología, Pesquerías y Oceanografía del Golfo de México (EPOMEX)" (Program of Ecology, Fisheries and Oceanography for the Gulf of Mexico) on the 26th of July 1990. This initiative came forth due to concern of this University with the problems related to ecology, oceanography and fisheries, not only on the coast of Campeche, but on all the coastal zone of the Gulf of Mexico.
