UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme Philippines National Workshop
Summary
The UNESCO-IOC Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme (TRRP) is an international community-based recognition programme aimed at building resilient communities through awareness and readiness strategies that will protect lives, livelihoods and property from tsunamis. Readiness is achieved through a collaborative effort among government agencies, scientists, community leaders and the public, who work together to meet an established set of 12 indicators covering Assessment, Preparedness, and Response. The Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, is actioned through Country National Tsunami Ready Programmes.
In the Philippines, all low-lying coastal areas are vulnerable to tsunamis. To bolster the capacity of national and local government offices in guiding communities towards preparedness and achieving ‘Tsunami Ready’ recognition, the Philippine Government, with the kind support of the United States Department of State Office of International Disaster Response, and United States National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), through the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and its International Tsunami Information Centre (a joint partnership between the IOC and NOAA), is conducting a 3-day national workshop on 8 to11 December 2025 at the Park Inn North EDSA, Metro Manila, Philippines. Invited participants are officials from the Philippines national, provincial, municipal, and local governments, experts from the tsunami and earthquake science agencies, and emergency management and disaster risk reduction agencies, and elected officials. The workshop will overview the Tsunami Ready Recognition Programme, the recognition process, and its requirements. Participants will explore diverse examples for each indicator and discuss strategies to ensure that all at-risk communities are assisted to become prepared and resilient to tsunamis.
