The IOC-UNESCO Field Workshop on Assessment and Awareness of Makran Tsunami Hazards will be held in Jask, Iran, from 9-20 October 2010. The workshop forms the second part of the UNESCAP-funded project “Assessment and Awareness of Makran Tsunami Hazards” The goal of the project is to build capacity in Iran and Pakistan for palaeotsunami studies in the Makran subduction zone region in order to fill the gap of knowledge about tsunami risk in that region. The project started with Preparedness and Awareness workshops in Tehran and Karachi in March 2010, and is now followed by fieldwork in the Jask coastal region of Iran in October 2010. Participants will conduct a palaeotsunami study, learning techniques from international experts, and will also interview potential eyewitnesses of the 1945 Makran tsunami. Information gained from the fieldwork and interviews will be incorporated into future tsunami risk assessment and modelling studies.
