Thirty-first Session of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS-XXXI)
Summary
The Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS) was first established by the IOC in 1965 as a cooperation mechanism for countries in the Pacific whose coastal areas are threatened by tsunamis. Through the ICG, Member States have designed and developed the PTWS and work together to improve and sustain it.
According to IOC Resolution XXXIX-8 (2006), membership of the ICG/PTWS consists of:
- Member States of the IOC within and bordering the Pacific Ocean and adjacent seas
- Observers from other IOC Member States
- Invited observers from organizations (including NGOs), programmes and projects, in accordance with the IOC rules and procedures.
The current Officers of the ICG/PTWS are:
Chair: Mr Yuji Nishimae (Japan) – elected in December 2021
Vice-Chair: Dr Dakui Wang (China) – elected in September 2023
Vice-Chair: Dr Wilfried Strauch (Nicaragua) – elected in December 2021
Vice-Chair: Mr ‘Ofa Fa’anunu (Tonga) – elected in September 2023
The meeting agenda is technical in nature and delegates should be prepared to participate in the technical discussions.
