The JCOMM Technical Workshop on Wave Measurements from Buoys (2-3 October 2008, New York) proposed two pilot projects for the measurements of waves from buoys: • PP-WET for the inter-comparison and evaluation of wave spectral measurements from moored buoys, and • PP-WMD for the investigation of techniques for making wave spectral measurements from drifting buoys. Draft proposals for these two projects were submitted to the Data Buoy Co-operation Panel (DBCP) at its annual session in Cape Town in October 2008, and were unanimously approved. The next stage is to further develop the draft work programmes for these projects and to focus on making some practical progress that can be reported to the next session of the DBCP (Paris, late September 2009). The proposed PP-WMD Steering Committee will follow on from the first meeting of the PP-WET Steering Committee on 11-12 May, at the same venue (at Scripps), in order to review outcomes from New York Workshop and DBCP XXIV, and review work plan and its progress. Discussion on techniques for wave spectral measurement from drifters and practical next steps are expected to follow.
