The massive explosion on the volcanic island of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai (HTHH), about 30 km (19 mi) south-southeast of Fonuafoʻou island in Tonga, on 15 January 2022 at about 4:14 UTC, generated a tsunami that caused damages locally, regionally, and across the Pacific. Due to the potential for another HTHH eruption and tsunami, immediate development of an Intergovernmental Coordination Group for Pacific Tsunami Warning and Mitigation System (ICG/PTWS) Interim Procedures Implementation Plan for the Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha`apai Volcanic Tsunami Hazard Response was initiated. Three PTWS Post-Event Briefs were conducted to shared Member States responses and Lessons Learned (20 January, 3 February, 10 February), and a Task Team established to guide the development in February 2022.
On 16 March 2022, IOC Circular Letter 2882 shared the HTHH Volcanic Tsunami Hazard Response (PTWS Interim Procedures Implementation Plan) describing the interim Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for responding to the possibility of future tsunamis originating from volcanic eruptions or processes similar to the HTHH event. The SOP became effective 15 March 2022 carried out by the PTWC acting as a PTWS Tsunami Service Provider. In July 2022, the PTWS Steering Committee approved the Hunga Tonga–
