Experts Meeting Earthquake and Tsunami Hazard in Northern Haiti: Historical Events and Potential Sources
Summary

Purpose: Quantify the earthquake and tsunami sources to be used for hazard assessments and risk reduction projects in northern Haiti. Background: In the aftermath of the devastating January 12, 2010 Haiti earthquake, significant efforts are underway to identify and mitigate the risk associated with future earthquake and tsunamis in Haiti. In addition to efforts focused on Port au Prince, research and assessments are being performed for northern Haiti, in particular Cap Haitien. On May 7, 1842 a very large earthquake occurred at 17:00 local time (21:00 UTC). It had an estimated magnitude (MS) of 8.1. A destructive tsunami was also triggered by this earthquake. Both the earthquake and tsunami badly affected the northern coast of Haiti and what is now the Dominican Republic. Approximately 5,000 people were killed by the effects of the earthquake shaking and another 300 by the tsunami. There is no consensus on the source of this earthquake. The purpose of this technical scientific meeting is to discuss the source of the 1842 event as well as other sources of earthquakes and tsunamis that could impact the northern coast of Haiti. Topics: 1842 Earthquake and other historical events affecting Northern Haiti/Hispaniola Tsunami modeling, input required to run the models, other tsunami studies in the Caribbean Earthquake hazard assessment, input required. On shore and off shore Earthquake Sources for Tsunamis north coast of Haiti. Local, regional, teleseismic Other tsunami sources for north coast of Haiti, eg. landslides Paleoseismology Studies in Northern Hispaniola
